My work is all about the ever changing light in the landscape.
“Atmosphere is the sensation directed upon the viewer, whereas mood is the actual feeling provided”.

New landscape painting ‘Spellbound Evening’
New landscape painting ‘Spellbound Evening’, acrylic on stretched canvas (80 x 60 cms). I like the way the light strikes the landscape and reflects into the late afternoon sky creating shadows in the foreground.
A symphony of colours: My new impressionist painting - ‘Daybreak Muse’
This is one of my favourites, ‘Daybreak Muse’, a recent impressionist sunrise. It’s had a few ‘lives’ along the way but it suddenly just worked when the colours, light and blending all came together. The glow descends from the clouds right down to the horizon.
New landscape painting ‘Sunlit Breath’
New landscape painting ‘Sunlit breath’, acrylic on canvas 27.5 x 25.5 cms. My larger paintings on canvas and paper capture the mood of a place ‘in that one moment in time’.
My new landscape painting ‘Ochre Sunset’
My new painting ‘Ochre Sunset’, an acrylic painting of a hazy Autumn sunset with yellow and pink clouds in the sky, rich colour on the horizon and dark shadows in the green landscape.
New landscape painting ‘Twilight Ebb’
New landscape painting ‘Twilight Ebb’, acrylic on stretched canvas (60 x 60 cms). Capturing the light at the end of day I painted this during the summer months when we did have some good weather.
New ‘Autumn Twilight’ series on wood and canvas
New ‘Autumn Twilight’ series on wood and canvas. I painted these after the recent hot spell gave way to the rush of darker and cooler evenings and spells of rain that ushered in Autumn.
New painting ‘Whispering Dawn’
New painting ‘Whispering Dawn’ I painted this after waking early one morning and seeing how quietly the dawn evolved.
Its a 76x50cms stretched canvas with softer brushstrokes and blended colours to reflect the silence and serenity of the break of day.
Spellbound Evening by Mary Burtenshaw
An impressionist landscape painting entitled ‘Spellbound Evening’ based on a recent sunset. it was unforgettable how slowly the sunset arrived but also how slowly how it hung in the sky for a couple of hours……just mesmerising.
Large Canvas Paintings
I paint dramatic impressionist and abstract landscapes and seascapes which are inspired by my love of the countryside and the many and varied places I have visited, creating the atmosphere and feeling of a scene with colour, texture and light.
