‘Autumn Mist’, a serene symphony of colours.

‘Autumn Mist’ is a favourite of mine with its broody and moody atmosphere. It’s not as vibrant and bright as some of my paintings as it has a more serene feel.

It is based on memories of parts of Scotland and the beautiful countryside with the valleys and mountains and the mist always rising. I feel it’s more late afternoon, early evening with the subdued light and the muted blue sky.

I enjoyed painting ‘Autumn Mist’ as it has a lot more of an impressionist style with darker tones in the foreground. I used much bigger brushes to create a lot more blending giving the impression of bushes and trees on the landscape.

The light is mainly coming from the horizon although there is some in the sky shining through and between the clouds.

The pale yellow tone is quite a change for me and I used it to create the afternoon light before the brighter colours of the sunset appear. You know that the sky is about to change and the warmth of the day even in the later months is moving and pushing up in to the sky.

I used the bigger brushes in a circular motion to create movement but intentionally in places used fewer brushstrokes to keep it impressionist, but then blending to capture the light and evoke an atmosphere of an inspirational late afternoon. ‘That first glow before the evening arrives’.

‘Autumn Mist’ is currently in a group exhibition at ‘The Beach Gallery’ in Teddington until the end of January.
