‘Swirling Dawn’

My new abstract painting ‘Swirling Dawn’ is painted on handmade paper. It is quite a spontaneous painting as the paper is very absorbent and the acrylic dries almost immediately.

‘Swirling Dawn’ is painted with large brushes and blended with minimal strokes of colour.

I love the touches of orange in the sky and the vivid green against the white on the horizon.

The painting has a lovely glow and that feeling of the beginning of the day. In many ways the colours are almost like a sunset too. A lot of the texture comes from the paper.

The colours ochre, orange and brown quite often appear in my paintings so I am obviously quite drawn to that kind of palette.

The grey on the horizon gives the impression of trees and bushes and the burgundy strokes are the touches of early morning light.

The swirling colours of the clouds and the foreground bring a lot of movement and the painting almost seems to dance.
