My new acrylic landscape painting ‘Shadowy Sunset’

Shadowy Sunset Impressionist Landscape Painting by Mary Burtenshaw

‘Shadowy Sunset’ - 23.5 × 21.5 cms - Acrylic on canvas

This semi-realistic sunset has minimal brushstrokes but a lot of blending.

It was done as a quick study for a larger canvas in order to particularly replicate how the dark clouds form just above the horizon dissecting the heat of the setting sun.

That created low light at the edge of the horizon but with beautiful warm colours. Then each cloud formed a step into the distance.

Its a kind of drama gently fought out between atmosphere and the light and colour but it is also quite a calming painting as the clouds envelope you like arms meeting in the middle.

On this occasion the spontaneity came quickly resulting in a flow, movement and energy in this painting.
