‘Smouldering Dawn’ is a new painting painted on wood which I always love using as each piece of wood is different with it’s own unique texture.

It was inspired by some recent sunrises looking towards Hampton Court walking through Bushy Park. The light was so beautiful with all it’s varied colours from the warmth of the appearing sun but you can still see the colours of the night as they gently disappear to reveal the new day. It’s always amazing to watch.

The earliest known use of the word ‘sunrise’ is in the Middle English period (1150 - 1500) and in the Oxford English Dictionary the earliest evidence for ‘sunrise’ is from around 1400, in the writing of Geoffrey Chaucer, poet and administrator.

‘Sunrise’ - definition - ‘is the time when the sun appears in the morning and the sky becomes light’.

The beginning of a brand new day always gives a lot of new hopes and wishes and has been mentioned over the years in poetry, songs, books, plays and sayings throughout the centuries.

A painting framed in white of a vivid stunning sunrise with yellow on the horizon and pink and peach colour rising into the sky and shadows in the foreground

‘Smouldering Dawn’ 21 × 30 cms

I was trying to capture all the varied colours in the sky at that one moment in time, the shadows, depth and the light. The light seemed to rise up and drag the night time sky with it. I love all the peachy, orange tones and the lovely glow on the horizon with the reflections of the light shining down on to the foreground below.

Even though it’s quite an unusual size for me as it’s portrait rather than landscape I do feel it worked as the size seems to pull you in.

You may notice I used small brushes for the finer detail and slightly bigger brushes to blend the sky, so in a way it’s quite like my larger more impressionist paintings rather than my smaller paintings which are more abstract.

There’s a small amount of texture in the focal point which I always love as it really draws you in.

Here you can see another smaller similar painting called ‘Distant Daybreak 21.5 x 21.5 cms, painted in the same feel with the colours, texture and glow.

It would be perfect if you are looking for that small original painting to maybe start your art collection or you have that unique small space to fill.
