I really like ‘Dawn Shadows’ a small painting on paper as it has a lot of movement and energy.

The yellow brushstrokes give just enough detail and a real flow on the horizon with the low white clouds.

The dark green in the foreground gives the impression of shadows and the navy blue and turquoise are reflections from the sky.

There is a lot of warmth in the sky and you get a real sense of the day to come with the blue edge to the sky just appearing as the day begins.

I really like the bold brushstrokes making the painting quite abstract and full of texture. I felt it was a confident painting with such a limited palette.

Often these smaller paintings are done when I am working on or have finished a large canvas and I use the leftover paint on the palette.

It can be quite surprising what transpires and what colour combination works to produce something with mood, atmosphere and light and shadows whether it is a landscape or seascape.

These small works on paper have quite free brushstrokes and a limited colour palette and I often do them when I am finishing or have just finished a larger canvas. ‘They are a beginning but a very important beginning’ to inspire the next large painting on canvas’.
