I really like the spontaneity of painting small works on paper where the broader brushstrokes create a more abstract feel with bold colours and texture. That energy combined with the flow in creating the colours and form of the landscape can be extremely satisfying and inspiring when preparing for the challenge of a much larger canvas work.

The freedom of small studies is so different from larger canvases which require more concentration, blending and time so I can do several whilst working on a larger work. They are a beginning but a very important beginning.

You can take a look at my smaller studies on paper here.
